West Haven

An authentic Connecticut shoreline town. Settled in 1648, West Haven (then known as West Farms) was part of the original New Haven Colony. In 1961 the town was incorporated, making it the youngest town in Connecticut. Today, it is home to just over 55,000 residents. West Haven was home to the now closed Savin Rock Amusement Park, which began in the late 19th century as a regionally renowned seaside resort. It evolved into a general amusement park in the 20th century and eventually closed in 1966. The park ran along the west side of New Haven Harbor beachfront and is today a walk and bike path. West Haven has 3.5 miles of publicly accessible beach. The West Haven train station provides plenty of parking and a fast connection to Stamford and New York.

Schools

West Haven has six elementary schools K-4, one intermediate school 5-6, one middle school 7-8 and one high school 9-12. West Haven is also home to the University of New Haven, which is located in the hilly Allingtown district of the city. Several private schools include Notre Dame High School, a Roman Catholic all-boys school.

Recreation

Beach is life in West Haven with a 3-mile tract and largest stretch of publicly accessible shoreline in CT. Bradley Point is home to the largest 4th of July fireworks spectacular in the state. Visit Savin Rock Surf Shop for paddleboard, kayak and bike rentals throughout the summer, a fantastic way to explore the shoreline in town. The city is also home to Yale Field, a baseball park for the Yale University teams and formerly the home field for minor league baseball teams.

Shopping

The town green offers small business shopping with Walmart and Starbucks just up the street on Saw Mill Rd. Stop & Shop is available to meet your grocery needs and at the beach you’ll find Stowe’s, Jimmies and Turk’s of Savin Rock, all known for their seafood. Several other restaurant options can be found in West Haven including Zuppardi’s Apizza.
