Hamden

Originally settled by the Puritans as part of New Haven Colony, it was incorporated as its own town in May of 1786. Hamden offers a variety of lifestyles, and many employment opportunities. Located 10 minutes from New Haven, and central to many commercial sectors in New Haven County, Hamden is an ideal place to live and work. With 61,422 residents located in approximately 33 square miles, Hamden’s residents have the best of both worlds-proximity to urban life, with a community feeling all of its own. Commuters will find both the Merritt Parkway (Rt 15) and I-91 easily accessible in town.

Hamden has eight elementary schools K-6, one middle school 7-8 and one high school 9-12. There is also an alternative high school (Hamden Collaborative Learning Center – HCLC) and Alice Peck Learning Center. It is also home to St Rita’s and Hamden Hall Country Day School. Quinnipiac is a private co-ed university with students attending from all over the country and beyond.

Two miles of mountaintop resembling a sleeping giant give Sleeping Giant State Park its name. It’s a perfect outdoor gathering place for walking, running, hiking, picnicking, stream fishing and scenic vistas. Other public areas include West Rock Ridge State Park, East Rock Park and the Farmington Canal Trail. Hamden also has two public golf courses, four tennis court areas, public swimming pools and 18 municipal parks.

Shopping

There is extensive in-town shopping along Dixwell Ave. Absolutely everything you need and more from Kohl’s, Old Navy and Walmart to Marshalls and DSW. Continue down Dixwell Ave. into New Haven for even more stores. Plenty of dining options as well as drive thru’s if you’re on the go. There is no reason to leave the greater Hamden area to fulfill your needs.
